Fair journalism is finding its way back in Egyptian newspapers! It is heartwarming to let the Egyptian public learn the plight of their fellow citizens who are law-abiding citizens but are suffering civil death in their own country. Al-Ahaly is to be congratulated on exposing the problem without delving in theological arguments about the authenticity or divinity of the Baha’i Faith which has been the play field of many reporters and some judges in Egypt. Regardless of what one’s beliefs are or whether the government considers the Baha’i Faith is authentic, divine or not, the issue is civil rights and human rights.

May 2008 be witness to Egypt returning to its glorious past of respecting all its citizens rights regardless of their beliefs! May it be a year that witnesses Egypt upholding human rights and embracing diversity of beliefs not as a sign of weakness but as a sign of greatness! Egypt should embrace “the religion is God’s, and the country is for all its citizens”, its past slogan which embraces unity in diversity!

I read a report by the Arab League that 100 million Arabs are illiterate (one out of every three people) and that each year the Arab population expands by 3% while illiteracy is reduced by 1%. A net gain of 2% illiterates. If this is indeed true, it is a great travesty. An uneducated mind is not only a gem in the rough it is most amenable to manipulation. It is for this reason that Baha’u'llah has commanded obligatory education for all. Baha’u'llah emphatically says that the parents must empower their children to be educated to the highest level they are capable of achieving. He says that if the parents are too poor to provide the needed education, then it is the responsibility of the Local Houses of Justice to do so. And if there is the necessity of educating either a son or a daughter, then the daughter should have preference for she is the future first important educator of the children.

Egypt has been the leading Arab society for decades with a significant number of highly educated and erudite. Egypt needs to set the tone for the rest of the Arab world in freeing the masses from the yoke of illiteracy, poverty and parochialism.

It is sad that Egypt is shirking its responsibility by, in fact, perpetuating the misguided practices of discrimination and prejudice that have kept the Arab people from fully realizing their God-given potentials.
